The High Country has provided a rich chapter in American art history and continues to offer residents and visitors alike with opportunities to experience and engage in artistic events and activities. Below is a sampling of the various organizations and activities open to all.
Blowing Rock Art & History Museum
BRAHM is Blowing Rock’s home for the arts and welcomes multiple traveling exhibits annually, as well as showcasing its permanent collection of art by local legend Edward Dangerfield. Located at the corner of South Main and Chestnut Streets in downtown Blowing Rock, the BRAHM offers 21,000 square feet of art across 3-levels.
Watauga County Arts Council
Moving to the new Blue Ridge ArtSpace in 2013 at 377 Shadowline Drive in Boone, the WCAC features a rotating exhibit of works by local artists, each launched with an opening reception the first Friday of every month. Experience the literary and musical talents of the local arts community while meeting and mingling with the artists themselves!
Turchin Center for the Visual Arts
A part of Appalachian State University, the Turchin Center features a continuous rotation of exhibitions and a permanent collection of artworks significant to Appalachian heritage. The Center also encourages interaction with art and provides a variety of workshops to this end. The TCVA is located at 423 West King Street in Boone.
The Quilt Trail
Quilt patterns have long been a means of identifying family and community barns in Appalachia. The Quilt Trail maps out a scenic drive through the Blue Ridge while uncovering the many places and patterns that define aspects of Appalachian heritage. Download the map by the Watauga Arts Council here.
Art in the Park
Art in the Park was created in 1962 by a handful of area artists and craftspeople to showcase local talent. Today, Art in the Park is host to 90 artisans per show, where some of the best local and regional artists and craftspeople showcase their handcrafted jewelry, pottery, fiber, glass, photography, painting and more.
