St. Patrick's Day in Blowing Rock

While there’s no St. Patrick’s Day parade in Blowing Rock, we make up for it on July 4th with the most postcard-perfect small town parade along our historic Main Street. What is open on this March holiday are the wonderful restaurants of our town. For obvious reasons, no place this past Saturday was busier than Six Pence Pub, Blowing Rock’s most visited watering hole. It’s certainly a favorite for the staff at Blue Ridge Mountain Club, and for several reasons. Six Pence’s doors seem always open, no matter what the weather…snowstorm, late nights…they are always ready to serve that pub burger or pour a perfect pint. The other big reason it’s a favorite for many is the terrific staff. Erik (pictured left) and his bartending staff (Brad, Henry, Rich and Linda) are the friendliest and most knowledgable around. Building on last year’s excitement, Manager Lela and Bartender Erik devised bigger and better St Patrick’s Day prizes for the happy and zealous patrons. Guinness pint purchases included balloons with number ticket’s inside which corresponded with themed gifts for the lucky winners which included logo glasswear, t-shirts, gift certificates, and even neon bar lights advertising popular brews from the Emerald Isle. The many green-clad (and surprisingly well mannered) revelers included droves of both locals and visitors throughout the day including the command staff of the Army’s "White Falcons", 2nd Battalion, 325th Infantry Regiment enjoying some well-deserved R&R. The unit just returned to the US and was one of the last units to depart Iraq. Their safe return is surely something worth raising a pint to! We all look forward to next year’s festivities. To end the post I’ll leave you with a traditional Irish toast…"and may you live all the years of your life." Cheers!
