Tailgating Before the ASU/Chattanooga Game

It‘s September 24th, early Saturday morning in Blowing Rock, NC. The early morning fog is lifting and the cool mountain breeze is quite the respite from the 90 degree plus weather just down the mountain.

After a relaxing breakfast and several cups of piping hot coffee, my wife Sherri and I make our way into Blowing Rock for a quick stop at Footsloggers, and then off to the Tanger outlet mall for some pre pre-game activities.

Yes, it’s game day! The opportunity to watch the Appalachian State Mountaineers, owners of three Division I-AA National championships and six consecutive Southern Conference Championships play at 3:30. Whether you are an alumnus or just love the college football environment, Kidd Brewer Stadium located in the center of ASU’s campus is the perfect place to be on a Fall Saturday afternoon in Boone, NC.

Today, we are tailgating at the pleasure of our hosts at the Blue Ridge Mountain Club (BRMC). As we are transported to the stadium in first class style, we arrive for a tailgating party with BRMC owners & prospective owners, and employees. Now, this is the way to enjoy college pre-game tailgating! Refreshments of every variety with the Bloody Mary being my beverage of choice for the afternoon, an outstanding variety of tailgating cuisine, and a yes, there was corn hole, footballs being tossed around as children of every age enjoyed the activities. Our seats faced the west stands and allowed us to enjoy a perfect sun drenched autumn afternoon amongst the pageantry of the band, cheerleaders, alumni and students alike, cheering for their beloved Apps. Despite the tremendous success of the program, these fans don’t take winning for granted and the game against UT-Chattanooga was a defensive battle with the Mountaineers pulling away for a hard fought, well earned 14-12 victory. The home football team and fans came away with yet another victory, and Sherri and I left the stadium with another reminder of why we travel to Blowing Rock/Boone on every available occasion, and why we are owners in the Blue Ridge Mountain Club and members of the BRMC family!!!

This football game is just one of several Blue Ridge Mountain Club events we attended this year. Whether it was the wine tasting event, symphony by the lake weekend, or the fly fishing clinic, our BRMC neighbors are always a welcoming sight and the breath taking mountain community speaks a special language for itself. We can’t wait for the next such occasion!
