My sister, brother-in-law, and I went for a great hike on the Dugger Trail last week, and what a fun adventure it turned out to be. We were about thirty minutes down the trail when my sister spotted a "chipmunk". She said it was flying!!!?? It ran up a tree – when down from the tree, swooped a huge brown owl on silent wings. Luckily it didn’t get the "chipmunk" which we spotted again. Indeed it did fly! It flew right into an old hiking boot tied onto a tree. Blue Ridge Mountain Club Office Coordinator, Whitney Brown, later identified the chipmunk for us as a Southern Flying Squirrel which is rarely, almost never in fact, seen by humans, which makes our experience even more unique and exciting! So next time you pass by the old hiking boots, you never know who could be lurking inside. It’s amazing, the things that can happen when you are just enjoying another day at Blue Ridge Mountain Club.
